Some things I've learned....

(1) An Engineer can do with 10 cent what a fool can do with a Euro.

(2) "Puff" - unimportant; insignificant; unworthy of study by engineering students; waste of time

(3) It's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're stupid than to open it and prove them right!

(4) Blockwork people and concrete people can never work on the same site... Apparently they don't like each other....

(5) It's official; I'm fantastic!

Warhawk - The Review

Where Uncharted: Drake's Fortune had no multiplayer whatsoever, now I'm onto a game that is only multiplayer. Available as a PSN download or on Blu-Ray disc, I find myself in tears for not buying this game when if first came out. Like Uncharted, I waited far too long to get my hands on this highly enjoyable online multiplayer experience.

Warhawk is a basically a third person shooter where you fight in a fictional war between the Eucadians and the Chernovans. You're not really given any information as to why you're fighting each other but realistically, it's not necessary. Warhawk pits a mass of players in epic war with Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Zones. All classic multiplayer game modes. Gameplay is clean and fluid, not once have I come up to any framerate drops. The game can be played using SIXAXIS sensitivity when flying a Warhawk or you can pull off rolls and dives with the trusty analog sticks. In total, the basic package gives you 2 vehicles (a jeep and a tank), 3 turrets (machine gun, missile and flak) and 1 Warhawk. Each faction has its own jeep/tank/warhawk so I guess you could in theory double those numbers. The ground foot combat is equally enjoyable with a range of weapons from knives to rocket launchers and pistols to flamethrowers.

Everything is quite balanced gameplay wise, but the real fun is getting into the air in a warhawk. If its picking off troops on the ground as you hover over them with a quick tap of Triangle or you're twisting through the caverns in a dogfight chase with another warhawk, the possibilities provide an infinite number of mini-narratives that can be played out. The map is littered with sandbag defences, bunkers, turrets and what not. There's plenty of ruined building's or bridges lying around which make Zone games extremely fun. Voice chat can add to experience using the Bluetooth headset that comes with the Blu-Ray version of the game.

Visually, Warhawk can't really be flawed for what it offers. Animations are nice, gameplay is fluid and draw-distance is good. Realistically, Warhawk is all about having fun. I can tell you now, I die a LOT! I probably suck at the game, though I've never managed to come last in any ranked game mind you, and I've only been promoted up one rank. Speaking of that, ranking is a little strange, it's based on medals and achievements you get, like killing a certain number of people with a machine gun or something. It's also rumoured to be HOME integrated when it's released. As you rank up, you get more customisable options for your character and your warhawk.

Expansion backs and updates are regulrarly released. Operation: Omega Dawn was released last year, added a new ship - a dropship which could carry troops and vehicles - a new map, and modified the original maps. Operation: Broken Mirror is to be released tomorrow, with a new ground vehicle, new map and more weapons. Updates released over PSN which are free sometimes add new weapons aswell.

In conclusion, Warhawk is a must own really. A single player campaign might have been nice, but realistically, the multiplayer component is more than sufficient. Getting killed so often in a game has never been so much fun...even if it you manage to get killed by one of your own grenades...

My Shopping List

I have myself sorted for the rest of 2008, starting this month we have....

Grand Theft Auto 4 - 29th April
I believe this needs no introduction, with new added multiplayer, downloadable vehicles and 100+ hours of gameplay, I hardly think you would want or need any more.

Haze - 22nd May
If you've been watching this space then you should know a lot about it, and if you don't, just do a search in my other blogs with "Haze" in the wording. Free Radical's latest FPS promises to deliver new aspects to the typical gunplay of FPS's aswell as boasting a rather impressive multiplayer.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - 12th June
Again, no introduction needed. I don't know how many videos I've posted of this game up here, system seller in the waiting....

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - July
Lucasarts' latest expansion of the Star Wars Universe, with a whole heap of toys, figures and Lego to help with marketing. Players take control of Darth Vader's apprentice and using Lucasarts' new physics engine can interact with the environment and use the force like never before. While I hope it delivers, here has his doubts....

Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Playstation HOME - Sometime between August and November!!
Little Big Planet promises something special, creating your own world with seemingly limitless possibilities, and with the ability to upload to the PSN and play other people's world's, LBP is something which could very well bring the PS3 back to casual gamer market....

Killzone on Playstation 2 promised much...but didn't deliver. And whilst that demon still haunts the gaming world, people are optimistic that Killzone 2 - pictured below - will deliver. The in-game footage available on Gametrailer.com shows just how good this game looks. Though that video was some time ago. Here is hoping that there'll be a HUGE announcement regarding said title at E3 this year....

Playstation HOME is set to be released this year, allowing PS3 owners to enter a virtual world (much like Second Life) and interact with gamers all across the world. Whether you fancy a game of pool with a friend across the Atlantic or want to show off all your game achievements in your own house, HOME has it all. Like LBP, HOME - which is free - could well reel in those casual gamers still on the bench over 7th generation consoles. And with all the talk of trophies and cars being linked to the game, the prospect of HOME becomes more tantalising each day...

As well as all that, there's new albums from Metallica, Slipknot and Rammstein. Not to mention the Iron Man and Batman movies!

Going to be a good year!!

The Star Wars Retrospective

Gametrailers.com have hit out with two fabulous videos reliving the history of Star Wars video games. Not having owned an NES or SNES when they first came out, I have since played them on emulators, and I seriously have enjoyed them more than even some of the today's modern games.

Grinds My Gears!! - Issue 16

As you will be well aware, more often than not I try to keep the tone of GMG comical, but on rare occasions I'm called upon to make them more serious. This is such an occasion. A few issues back I made a joke about people complaining, particularly protesters. Now that joke still remains, however the protesters I'm talking about here are of a different sort.....

The Hill of Tara Vs the M3 has been one of the biggest ongoing debates in this year and last year. Most recently, the saga reached boiling point when protesters dug themselves into the ground to prevent construction. THIS is the type of protesting that pisses me off! First of all, look at the map - the M3 goes nowhere near the Hill itself. Furthermore, it is actually further away from the hill than the existing road!! It's this type of bullshit anti-globalisation protesting that is keeping Ireland behind in the world as far as infrastructure goes. We had the same problem with the completion of the M50 a few years back!

Yes as you can see the road goes over historic sites, that isn't denied. But archaelogical digs have been carried out, and all artefacts have been retained and so on. Ireland is an historic place, but we can't sacrifice pots and pans for a badly needed motorway. A poll showed that 90% of the people in the area WANT this road. Furthermore, it was also found that the protesters aren't even from the bleedin' area! They're people with nothing better to do than cause trouble for everyone else. As an aspiring engineer, I can see just how infuriating this type of BS really is! Instead of these people actually going out and getting a job, putting money into the economy, they are instead damaging the economy and wasting tax payers money by not letting people get on with their jobs! They have effectively invaded a construction site - which is against the law - and should henceforth be arrested. The anti-globalistation crap has gone on long enough in Ireland. Only now are we starting to build 100m+ towers across Dublin, namely the U2 Tower, the Point Depot Tower and the Heuston Tower (all below)

People who get in the way of these kinds of things are just asking for trouble. At the Glen of the Downs in Wicklow, people literally climbed into trees to stop construction of the N11, which (now that it is completed) has been a huge success in reducing commute times. We are so far behind the rest of the world in getting our act together on these matters...its actually quite unbelievable. In the time it takes for us to get one project through planning permission, another EU country will have 3 skyscrapers built. It's an absolute God-send that acts are now being passed which will stop vital infrastructural projects like the Metro and future motorways from being blocked. Instead, maybe these people who like to get in the way would better spend their time working. They've said "Redirect the road". Trust me when I say (even after doing brief road design) that it isn't as simple as just "drawing a new line on the map". Do these people seriously think that the Government have purposefully placed the road where it it just to piss people off? No, its there because that's the most economical solution available, avoiding further spending of tax payers money. But alas, since this select group of people not even from the area have decided to hold everything up...tax payer's money is being wasted.

People seriously need a rethink and start cutting the bullshit and let this country move on into the future. Ask any layman and they'll say they couldn't give a damn about this road. And on a personal level I don't really either (I mean I don't live in the area, nor do I drive through that area), but professionally, since it is this sector I'll be working in, the frustration and angst it is causing is unbelievable. A few months back, one student filed a High Court (or Supreme Court) injunction or something like that which has held up progress. Not stopped it, just held it up until it has gone through the courts. To think that an act of one person can stop a whole project is simply unacceptable. Yeah, yeah free-speech and all that but you have to draw the line somewhere. Far more people want this road; particularly those living in the area, and that should speak volumes for how badly it's needed. The Hill of Tara itself will be untouched, and so what if we lose a few stone walls? Dublin City itself must be built on top of historical sites left, right and centre!

So let's cut the crap and get on with moving this country forward!

AVGN - Double Vision: Part 1

Yeah I know, I promised a GMG this week but I've had a lot of work to do taking in project submissions for my group and stuff which requires my attention.

Anyway, in this week's video the Nerd shows us all about Atari's main competitors back in the day....

Enjoy:

I promise a highly controversial GMG by the end of week!
